Mommas: Give me some insight.

edited January 2014 in Babies on the Brain
I'm seriously curious about this.

Why is it that women continue to refer to their children in months after one year? I recently heard a woman say "My 29 month old". I was confused; why not just say Two and a half? Is it simply habit carried over from counting months as they grow up? Is there some benefit to saying it (iono, providing more info to other moms?) that I just don't get cause I'm not one? I really have no idea!

Re: Mommas: Give me some insight.

  • I stopped talking in months after 18 months.  I revert to months when talking to another momma, but otherwise I use half years now.  I think after age 2 it's silly to use months.

  • Not a momma yet but this is because of the huge developmental milestones that occur during a short amount of time. A 6 month old is very different than an 11 month old. A 14 month old is very different than an 18 month old. I think after about 18 months it makes more sense to say "1 and a half" or "almost 2" and then just 2, 3, 4, etc.

There's a pretty big difference between 12 months and 17 months (some don't walk or talk at all by 12 months but most walk and say several words by 17, for example), so I understand not just saying "One." At one point I was like, "She'll be one and a half in 2 months", and I went back to months. But after 2 I think it's odd. The difference between 24 months and "not quite 2.5" aren't that big.
Ditto this. My son will be two in February, so when people ask, that's what I say. But when he was 20 months, it seemed weird to say either "he's one year and eight months" or "he'll be two in four months." Under two, I think months are just more accurate. Over two, it's not really necessary.

  • I understand using months prior to 18 months. From 18-21ish months I said 1.5. From 22-23 months I said he'll be two in December (or January for dd). People don't really care that much.

  • I kind of guessed it was something along those lines. Thanks for clarifying everyone! Curiosity sated :3
